Foreclosure News in a Minute

Here is a brief synopsis on the latest foreclosure news to hit the press.
Washington Post: In an attempted to curb Maryland foreclosure rates, state legislation passed a program giving the homeowners a legal right to mediate with their lenders. Under the mediation program the lender is required to send a loan modification application to the defaulter.
Reuters: According to a recent poll, “U.S. consumers are less interested in buying a foreclosed home than they were a year ago.” Reporter Lynn Adler suggests this could lead to an increased backlog of foreclosed …

Jumping Ship- How homeowners are walking away

According to a recent 60 Minutes episode an increasing amount of homeowners are ‘walking away’ from their homes and are headed down foreclosure alley- willingly. Apart from the more traditional foreclosure woes spurred by job loss, or illness these homeowners would rather foreclose due to underwater mortgages despite their ability to make payments.
In a separate Reuters article, underwater mortgages have increased from 21.4 percent in Q4 2009 to 23.3 percent in Q1 2010. In areas hard hit by foreclosure underwater homes account for more than 50% of all loans.
Interviewer Morley …

Leaving Las Vegas

Over the last few years foreclosure and its distressing effects on the human psyche have been blamed for some unfortunate incidents and behaviors by homeowners. From the more recent bulldozing escapade by disgruntled owner Terry Hoskins to more bleak reports of suicide, foreclosures seem to have been pegged at the root of the problem.
The latest foreclosure blame-game report may be a stretch though. A recent opinion column in the Wall Street Journal implicates foreclosure as one of the causes for the recent attempted terror plot in New York City’s Time …

Colorado- Post HB 1402

It has been a little over a year since the state of Colorado took foreclosure reporting into its own hands. Last month the state released its first yearly foreclosure report based on the numbers of its own collection methods. Colorado was the first state to break away from a reliance on the many times inaccurate reporting of RealtyTrac.
The only snag seemed to be reports comparing August and September 2009 rates with the prior year. According to the foreclosure data report, “the large difference in foreclosure filing totals between …

Florida Foreclosures: The Real Breakdown

According to the most recent foreclosure news articles foreclosure have once again reached record highs- now said to be in the millions. RealtyTrac’s semiannual report was recently released titled, “1.9 Million foreclosure filings reported on more than 1.5 million U.S. Properties in first half of 2009.” At least the foreclosure listing company correctly assessed the records as foreclosure filings rather than simply ‘foreclosures’ as many reporters incorrectly state.
RealtyTrac also provides some additional information in the headline, which makes our job much easier, which is specifying 1.5 million homes …

Colorado Draws the Line

A couple of years ago RealtyTrac was in some hot water for over-inflating foreclosure statistics for the state of Colorado. According to one Foreclosure Article in The Seattle Times, published online on June 16, 2007, “RealtyTrac reported 54,747 foreclosures last year — one of the highest in the nation. The state’s Division of Housing, however, said the actual number was 28,453 and publicly chastised the firm for inflating numbers.”
The article titled, “Numbers from foreclosure statistics company questioned,” continued by stating the company doubled, even triple-counted foreclosures for a single property.

Foreclosure calculation errors or bad reporting?

With the latest third-quarter figures still in the news, now is a good time for some further scrutinization. Strategically and purposefully, it seems that foreclosure listings companies offer their statistics in varying forms as not to draw any obvious attention to the disparities afflicting the data.
The most recent reports do just that.  An article published on October 10, 2008 in the South Florida Business Journal, uses ForeclosureS.com reported numbers for Florida during the period of September, 2008. The article, titled, “Florida ranks No. 3 for foreclosures,” stated there were …

Foreclosure statistics have again sprung up across all media outlets. However, unlike recent trends, the headlines for California are claiming dramatic foreclosure declines. Imagine, in a time with economic strain taking precedence in the media, comes an article with a slight glimmer of hope? But is it based on fact?
According to reports from Foreclosure Radar, California foreclosure notices in September dropped significantly compared to rates in August. The statistic comes from one of several articles on the subject, this one titled, “State foreclosures fall dramatically.” The article quotes …

With August foreclosure figures trickling in to the media this month, more erroneous data reporting is represented throughout all media outlets. Foreclosure filings for August did increase but total foreclosures for the period varied depending on the source.
According to an article in the Los Angeles Biz Journal, “Foreclosure filings — default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions — were reported on 303,879 US properties during August.”  The article, published on September 12, 2008, titled “California has nation’s 2nd highest foreclosure rate in August,” continues by stating that while there …

The latest foreclosures numbers have been released by various foreclosure reporting agencies.  According to most of the reports second quarter foreclosure filings have increased since the same period one year ago.
In an article published by Bloomberg.com on July 25, 2008, RealtyTrac, a reporting agency located in Irvine, California specifically stated foreclosures had increased more than 120% during that period.  The article titled, “U.S Foreclosures Double as House Prices Decline,” by author Bob Ivry, also stated that while foreclosure may have doubled from 2007, there was only a 14 percent increase …
